Korea Travels - Day 0-1, Flying o so high...

Since Sangmi, my best friend from collage, is getting married, Eric and I are heading to Korea. The trip began on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We flew from there to Chicago where there was a long lay over. Additionally, there was an issue with the plane, so we were delayed a bit longer. Finally, we were able to board the flight to Japan. In the air, the pilot told us we would make up time in the air, and he did.

We flew United on a 777. It was a good experience. There was ample room, as much as can be expected, anyway. Additionally, each seat had a personal TV screen in the back of the seat in front of them. This way, we could watch whatever movie we wanted. That was nice. Additionally, there was an option to view the map. We could see where we were, how long we had been in the air, the time we expected to land, altitude, speed, etc. It was very nice.

After 11 or so hours, we finally landed in Japan. It was the smoothest landing I have ever experienced. Wow.

As we were taxing to the gate, we saw a sign that said "Down with Narita". We aren't sure what that was about, but Narita was the name of the airport we were at.

Since we were late getting off of the ground, we didn't have any layover in Japan. That was nice. The flight to Korea was uneventful. We experienced another good landing at ICN.

It was my first time through immigration and customs. That was pretty easy. We had to fill out a couple of forms and stand in a line for a while. Not much to that. I was surprised how many signs were in English in both the Japan and Korea airports.

A word of warning to all who will travel to Korea. As you leave the airport, taxi drivers will approach and be very pushy. They want you to take a taxi to Seoul because it is really expensive. The bus is really cheap. Take the bus.

After a 1 hour bus ride, we arrived in Seoul. Around midnight, we reached our hotel. The hotel is very nice. We are staying at Vabien Suites II. It has a kitchenette. The room is better than expected. Ah, a nice bed feels so good.

I was surprised to have a dryer and a tiny dishwasher. The fridge/freezer was hidden behind a cabinet door. To turn on the lights, our room key needed to be placed in a slot. This is so the lights aren’t left on when nobody is around. Additionally, they were motion activated. This could be overridden if you wanted. Instead of a peephole, there was a camera outside our door. It is so cool.

Eric isn’t nearly as excited as I am….I guess he is just tired. ;)

Well, we have had a very nice time so far. All the people have been very friendly and helpful. Time for sleep.
